The Liberal Democrats’ most recent Newnham Democrat newsletter carried the headline “Developers missing affordable homes targets.” It claimed that the Labour city council was responsible for the 40% affordable homes target being missed in a local development.

This is misleading because it is the damaging Growth and Infastructure Act (2013), voted through by Liberal Democrat MPs in the Coalition government, that is now making it difficult for councils to enforce affordable homes targets.

And when Lib Dems ran Cambridge City Council, housing developments did not always meet affordable housing targets – for example, a development in Rustat Road fell well short despite Labour’s strenuous attempts to force the responsible Lib Dem councillors to hold the developers to their commitments.
