A final confirmation from Danny Alexander, Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury, that the Student Loans Company will be privatised is yet another betrayal of the many students who voted Lib Dem in seats such as Cambridge.

Newnham Labour Campaigner, Sam Wolfe, who teaches in the Modern and Medieval Languages Faculty at the University of Cambridge said ‘students in Cambridge have taken out a loan from the government to fund their studies on the understanding that they would pay this money back to the government, not a profit-hungry lender. It is appalling that the Liberal Democrats in government who were elected with a mandate to cut tuition fees have not only tripled them but are now suggesting that student loans will be privatised. This will undoubtedly lead to increases in interest rates that graduates will struggle to afford’.
