Bad decisions on public art are making Cambridge a laughing stock. Recent decisions by the Liberal Democrat administration have produced third rate art proposals and wasted large sums of public money.

More than £50,000 was spent on controversial Market Square memorial to Snowy Farr. After only a year in place the statue started deteriorating. It is now stained and chipped and the tails of its mice are falling off.

Over £123,000 has been earmarked for the notorious football commemoration on Parkers Piece. This has been delayed and is already too late for the anniversary it was planned to celebrate.

£8000 was wasted on developing plans for the infamous Subbuteo statue, supported by Rod Cantrill, City Councillor for Newnham and then Executive Councillor for Art and Sport. These plans have now been abandoned.

Public art is a cultural necessity for a city like Cambridge. It should give residents pleasure as well as providing value for money.

The Liberal Democrats’ management of public art in the city has been woeful.

Labour promises a full review of the way public art is commissioned in Cambridge.
