Tariq is running for the County Council. Here’s his candidate statement.

I’m Tariq, and I am standing for the county seat in Newnham on May 6.

I’ve lived in Cambridge for 22 years now, and am in fact an experienced former County Councillor (for Coleridge Ward). I was previously Leader of the Labour Group and parliamentary candidate for South Cambridgeshire. Currently I’m focused on campaigning against inequality as Chair of the Cambridge Commons and as a committee member of Cambridge 2030.

I’ve had had a long career in university fundraising and held the post of Development Director at two Cambridge Colleges. I now work for a small Cambridge social enterprise working with schools and schoolchildren on careers and employability, including supporting disadvantaged children, and am a Governor of TBAP Cambridge, an alternative provision academy. I’m also a former governor of the Parkside Federation and Ridgefield Primary School.

I believe that out priority has to be reducing the gap between the richest and poorest in the most unequal city in the UK – a priority which impacts many areas of public policy, including housing, transport, employment, income, health, and wellbeing, and believes that a more equal society benefits everyone.
